ISTA 3A vs ISTA 6-Amazon: Which Test Does Your Package Need?

If you sell products on Amazon, you’ve probably encountered both ISTA 3A and ISTA 6-Amazon. Although people sometimes use the terms interchangeably, they represent different test standards. Choosing the wrong one can delay certification and force you to repeat package testing. Understanding the differences helps you select the right protocol from the start.

ISTA 3A provides a general simulation test for individual packaged products shipped through a standard parcel delivery network. It remains carrier-neutral, making it a widely accepted standard for retailers, manufacturers, and regulatory organizations. As a result, many companies use ISTA 3A as a baseline to validate e-commerce packaging, regardless of where they sell their products.

In contrast, ISTA 6-Amazon includes a family of test protocols created specifically for Amazon’s packaging certification programs, including Ships in Own Container (SIOC) and the Amazon Packaging Support and Supplier Excellence (APASS) program.

Why ISTA 3A and ISTA 6-Amazon Aren’t Interchangeable

While these protocols use many of the same testing principles as general simulation standards, Amazon applies its own package categories, acceptance criteria, and reporting requirements. Consequently, a package can pass ISTA 3A yet still fail ISTA 6-Amazon certification because Amazon evaluates packaging against its own performance requirements and damage thresholds rather than the standard ISTA pass/fail criteria.

Key Differences To Know Before You Test

  • Recognition: 3A results are broadly accepted; 6-Amazon results are built for Amazon’s certification system specifically.
  • Test tiers: ISTA 6-Amazon testing is organized into weight- and package-type-based tiers that don’t map directly onto standard ISTA series.
  • Purpose: 3A validates general shipping durability; 6-Amazon validates eligibility for SIOC/APASS certification and Amazon’s frustration-free packaging program.
  • Redundancy risk: Testing to 3A alone won’t satisfy Amazon’s certification requirements, you’ll likely need 6-Amazon testing regardless.

If you’re selling primarily through Amazon, plan for 6-Amazon testing from the start rather than treating it as an add-on to 3A.

If you’re shipping through multiple channels (Amazon plus your own site or wholesale) you may need both. For a broader look at how 3A fits into general parcel testing, visit: ISTA Series 3. If you’re not sure which combination of standards your product needs across all your sales channels, our ISTA Planner tool can map that out based on where and how you ship.
