What is Rotational Edge Drop Integrity Testing?
Rotational edge drop testing covers the integrity of unitized loads and large shipping cases and crates. More specifically, rotational edge drop integrity testing evaluates how well the inner contents endure rough handling.
As an ISTA and ISO 17025 certified lab, Keystone Package Testing realizes the importance of rotational edge drop testing. Meeting drop testing compliance requirements can be difficult. We understand the challenges and guide companies through the process. Thus, Keystone’s proven process helps avoid product launch delays.

Why is Rotational Edge Drop Testing Important?
Damages to products observed during testing have a strong correlation with damages observed in the actual distribution system. Rotational edge drop testing and other impact tests allow the user to determine the integrity and stability of the load. The test also provides guidance to improve the design of the shipping container.
Damages to products and packaging during distribution can bring about expensive replacement fees. A harsh distribution system also results in a decline in sales, lost customer loyalty, and constant interruptions and delays. Many of these costs may be significantly reduced or eliminated with the proper testing and certification.
Package testing will ensure packaging integrity throughout transportation to mitigate risks. When correctly performing package integrity compliance testing, benefits will include:
- Balanced distribution costs
- Confidence in product launch
- Increased customer satisfaction and a growing market share
- Product to market time reduction
- Reduced damages and product loss
Rotational Edge Drop Compliance Testing Procedures
The rotational edge drop test is completed using a measuring device, a support block, and a flat rigid surface such as concrete or steel. The support block is 3.5 to 4.0 inches in height and width. The support block must be at least 8 inches longer than the longest package dimension to be supported.
To perform the test, one of the edges of the product is placed on the support block. The opposite edge is lifted 9 inches. Then, it is released quickly to allow it to free fall to the ground. The test standard calls for multiple drops of the product on certain sides.
If the product, while in a particular orientation, topples over before a side or edge can be lifted to the required support or drop height, then the rotational drop edge test is not possible. The Amazon SIOC test standard testing considers this test a shock test.
After the completion of the test, a report is written with the following information. This list is not intended to be all-inclusive.
- Condition of the test item(s) after the test
- Date, time, and name of engineer conducting the test
- Description of the equipment used to conduct the test
- Description of the contents
- Description of the test procedures used, angle of the drop, and height of the drop.
- Dimensions of the case, crate, or unitized load
