ASTM D3103 Thermal Insulation Package Testing

ASTM D3103 package testing assesses the thermal insulation quality of packages. As an ISTA and ISO 17025 certified lab, we realize the importance of D3103 thermal shock testing. Meeting the ASTM thermal insulation requirements can be difficult. We understand the challenges and guide companies through the process.

We have a reputation of helping customers achieve their package certifications. Keystone Package Testing partners with customers to achieve package compliance. Our accurate test reports are delivered quickly. Keystone takes an instructive approach throughout the entire test program.

Summary of ASTM D3103 Thermal Insulation Testing

The ASTM D3103 package testing method covers the thermal insulation quality of a package and the thermal stability of its contents. These contents, when exposed, are determined for ambient temperature conditions. It is recommended that a minimum of three samples must be tested to ensure reproducibility.

The thermal insulation testing method is for evaluating the performance of thermal insulated packaging used for high-value, high-risk materials. The distribution package test method may also be used for any products that need accurate internal packaging temperatures.

This method is fit for testing packages with various internal energy sources with or without payloads. Certain items must be shipped inside these temperature controlled packages. Factors affecting the rate of heat transfer include the insulation of the exterior package, energy source, and the product payload.

Scope of ASTM Thermal Insulation Package Testing

Testing conditions within the method are important factors to consider. The time-temperature test profile should be established prior to testing. Likewise, it is recommended that the test profile represent the actual worst case distribution conditions as closely as possible. Lastly, constant temperatures are noted and do not reflect actual transit conditions but may be useful for comparative purposes.

Packages are preconditioned for at least 24 hours or as specified and will reach a desired temperature. The number of probes per package depend on the size and number of the primary containers in the payload.

When a cooling or heat source is used, a weighed and measured quantity of refrigerant is placed in the package. When water, ice or gels are used, the temperature of the conditioning chamber is measured before removal.

Significance of ASTM D3103 Thermal Insulation Testing

The calibration accuracy of the temperature monitoring equipment is verified at the end of the test. Records of temperatures from the thermocouples and reference standard are independently kept. These are recorded for a minimum of three temperature points.

Next, the package is placed on a non-conducting platform or shelf. It is placed in such a manner that no part of the package contacts the chamber floor. The package is oriented the same way it may be found while shipping. Depending on the size of the package, various orientations may occur.

This lab test report will include the general information. This consists of, but is not limited to, the date, time, location and test engineer. The number of packages tested and the number of failures recorded will also be included within the report.

Dimensions of the package under test are specifically included in the report. Also, its structural specifications as well as a diagram of the internal thermal component assembly. These are just a few of the other in-depth details written in the report.
