ASTM D5416 Vibration Integrity Testing

ASTM D5416 Abrasion Resistance by Vibration Testing

This ASTM D5416 integrity standard compares the abrasion resistance of similar types of stretch wrap films. As an ISTA and ISO 17025 certified lab, Keystone Package Testing realizes the importance of abrasion resistance testing. Meeting the ASTM D6516 wrap films by vibration testing requirements can be difficult. We understand the challenges and guide companies through the process.

Summary of ASTM D5416 Vibration Testing

The ASTM D5416 test method is intended to provide only a comparative procedure. This helps evaluate unknown films against a standard or control film. Therefore, the performance has been defined as adequate in actual field conditions.

Discretion is advised when the user chooses to determine the applicability of several key factors. This may include the film wrap method, abrasion surfaces, and definition of failure. Thus, the test can be tailored to the individual distribution parameters.

Scope of ASTM D5416 Resistance by Vibration Testing

ASTM test method D5416 mimics the abrasion that an outer wrapping of film encounters. Generally, they are encountered in typical shipping, distribution, and transportation environments. The ASTM D5416 test procedure allows the user of this standard to make relative comparisons while the load is undergoing vibration.

The procedure consists of two single columns of units being individually wrapped. Next, the wrapped columns are set on the vibration testing table. A frequency sweep is performed and the resonant frequency is determined.

Each wrapped test column is vibrated for a total time of 60 minutes. The columns are inspected and measured for abrasion, holes, or tears. Total test duration is taken into consideration. Lastly, the amount of damage is recorded at the end of the test period or time of failure.

Significance of ASTM D5416 Package Integrity Compliance Testing

The ASTM D5416 report may include general information and detailed data from the testing. This information incorporates the test procedure, time, location, and test engineer. The number of packages tested and the number of failures recorded will also be included in the report. Details of the package include the type of material and other characteristics.

Specific information covered within this compliance testing method encompasses the dimensions and weight of each unit. Resonance of frequency or machine settings at which the test is run will also be enclosed in the report.
