ASTM D6537 Shock Integrity Laboratory Package Testing

ASTM D6537 Shock Testing of Package Performance

ASTM D6537 package testing measures the performance of cushioning in packages. As an ISTA and ISO 17025 certified lab, we realize the importance of shock package testing. Meeting the ASTM instrumented package shock testing requirements can be difficult. We understand the challenges and guide companies through the process.

Keystone provides the peace of mind that all of your needs will be met. We take a consultative approach throughout the entire test program. Our accurate test reports are delivered quickly. Lastly, when packages do not meet the requirements, we assist with finding solutions.

Summary of Shock Package Performance Information

ASTM D6537 package testing establishes methods for obtaining measured shock data for use with shock and impact test methods. It is not intended as a substitute for performance testing of shipping containers and systems such as ASTM D4169.

When testing, an ASTM D6537 package testing lab addresses acceleration measuring techniques. Other ways of measuring shock impacts, such as high-speed video, are not covered by this practice.

Scope of ASTM D5637 Shock Testing

Engineers may use a mock-up that matches the product’s dimensions, center of gravity, moment of inertia, and other key characteristics. If needed, they make minor modifications to accommodate accelerometers, routing cables, or observing the product during testing. Before testing begins, they also inspect the package for damage that may have occurred during shipment to the test facility. If damage is present, they repackage the product before proceeding.

The procedure begins by mounting an accelerometer at a location that accurately represents the product as a single mass. Next, technicians assemble the package according to the selected test option. They then perform the required shock tests and record the resulting data. Finally, they repeat the process as needed to complete the test program.

The final report documents the test date, time, location, and responsible test engineer. In addition, it identifies the test objective and applicable performance specifications. The report also includes conditioning parameters, the shock or impact equipment used, a package description, and the drop height or other recorded test inputs.

Significance of ASTM D6537 Acceleration Testing

A mock-up simulating the actual product with respect to dimensions, the center of gravity, a moment of inertia, and other product characteristics may be used. Minor modifications are made to the product to accommodate accelerometers, cabling, or to observe the product during the test. Lastly, care must be taken to ensure that no degradation has occurred to the package if the test packages have been shipped to the test site. If so, repackage the product before testing.

The procedure consists of mounting the accelerometer at a specific location on the product. This location must represent the product as a single mass. Next, the package is assembled in accordance with the specific option chosen. Lastly, the shock tests are performed and the data is saved. Repeat as needed.

General information stated in the report includes the date, time, location, and specific test engineer. On the other hand, specific data may consist of the purpose of the test and the applicable performance specifications. More information includes conditioning parameters, the shock or impact test apparatus used, description of the package, and the height drop or record of test input.
