ISTA 1D: Package Integrity Testing of Packages Weighing Over 150 pounds
ISTA 1D testing is an extended procedure that determines the integrity of individually packaged products. As an ISTA and ISO 17025 certified lab, we realize the importance of ISTA 1D package testing. Meeting the ISTA 1D requirements can be difficult. We understand the challenges and guide companies through the process.
Keystone Compliance quickly delivers accurate and comprehensive test reports shortly after completion of the testing. We are in constant communication throughout the test process. Keystone takes a consultative approach throughout the entire test program.

Summary of ISTA 1D Package Integrity Testing
ISTA 1D is an integrity test that covers the testing of individually packaged products weighing 150 pounds (68 kg) or more when prepared for shipment. More specifically, ISTA 1D challenges the capability of the package to withstand transport hazards. When applied correctly, ISTA 1D will provide benefits such as:
- Shortened packaged development time and confidence in product launch.
- Protection of products and profits with reduced damage and product loss.
- Economically-balanced distribution costs.
- Customer satisfaction and continued business.
Additionally, ISTA 1D testing can be used to compare relative performance of package and product design alternatives.
ISTA 1D Package Compliance Test Procedures
Note that only one sample is required for this test. The ISTA 1D test procedure calls for a number of tests including:
- Atmospheric Measurement Test Block-Temperature and Humidity.
- Compression Conditioning Block- Compression.
- Vibration Test Block-Fixed Displacement.
- Shock Test Block-Drop or Impact.
- Impact and Rotational Drop.
The chart below is from the standard and provides more guidance on the testing procedure and requirements:
|Sequence #||Test Category||Test Type||For ISTA Certification|
|1||Atmospheric Preconditioning||Temperature and Humidity||Required|
|2||Compression Conditioning||Machine or Static||Required|
|Alternative Incline Impact (conbur)|
|Alternative horizontal impact|
|5||Shock||Rotational Edge Drop||Required when not testing face 1|
Upon completion of testing, a report is created encompassing necessary data such as test engineer, date of testing, and package failures (if any), etc. That test report should be submitted to ISTA. If the product and package has met the ISTA requirements, the company will be able print the ISTA mark on its packaging along with a license number. This signifies that the package has passed the requirements of the ISTA pre-shipment testing. This package certification is recognized globally.
To maintain this certified status, the product must be retested if there are changes to the product, process or package.
