ISTA 4AB Package Testing
As an ISTA and ISO 17025 certified lab, we realize the importance of ISTA 4AB testing. Meeting the ISTA 4AB requirements can be difficult. We understand the challenges and guide companies through the process.
We have a reputation for helping customers achieve their package certifications. Keystone takes a consultative approach throughout the entire test program. We are in constant communication throughout the test process. When packages do not meet ISTA 4ab requirements, we assist customers with finding solutions.

Summary of ISTA 4AB Package Integrity Testing
ISTA 4AB covers testing of 12 different package types, 4 handling types, and 7 types of load-carrying materials or combinations. Any hazard (test) element may be assigned one of three intensities. Program inputs and test plans may be in English or metric units.
The ISTA test sequence is tailored to individual situations with the usage of up-to-date and specific hazard profiles and parameters. Unlike Focused Simulation, 4AB does not require the user to make quantitative field measurements and translate those into laboratory tests.
Measurement-derived test protocols are included as part of the simulation. Once the item to be shipped and the distribution system, means, and configurations are defined, a test plan is generated without further input.
The tests are performed on each test sample in the sequence indicated in the 4AB Test Plan generated.
The chart below is from ISTA 4AB the standard and provides more guidance on the testing procedure and requirements:
Sequence # | Test Category | Test Type | For ISTA Certification |
1 | Atmospheric Conditioning | Controlled Temperature and Humidity | If Required |
2 | Shock | Handling | Required |
3 | Vibration | Random Vibration with and/or without a Top Load | Required |
3 | Compression | Machine Apply and Release Force Apply and 12-Hour Hold | If Required |
3 | Vibration | Random Vibration with and/or without a Top Load | Required |
4 | Compression | Machine Apply and Release Force Apply and 12-Hour Hold | Required |
Significance of ISTA 4AB Package Integrity Testing
The ISTA 4ab testing standard focuses on the assessment of packaging systems’ ability to withstand the rigors of the distribution environment. It simulates the conditions typically encountered during shipping, such as vibration, compression, and impact.
By subjecting packaged goods to ISTA 4ab testing, manufacturers can evaluate the durability and strength of their packaging designs. This helps identify potential weaknesses or areas for improvement, allowing for modifications that can better protect products and prevent damage during transit.
Additionally, ISTA 4ab testing helps mitigate risk of product loss by identifying potential weaknesses in packaging systems. By conducting this testing, manufacturers can prevent costly damage and minimize financial losses associated with product returns, replacements, or customer dissatisfaction. The upfront investment in ISTA 4ab testing can lead to long-term cost savings by ensuring the integrity of goods throughout the supply chain.
