TAPPI 402 Conditioning for Paper and Related Products

TAPPI 402 Conditioning of Paper and Related Products

TAPPI T402 package testing applies various atmospheric conditions to paper and paper products. As an ISTA and ISO 17025 certified lab, we realize the importance of TAPPI 402 testing. Meeting the TAPPI atmospheric and conditioning requirements can be difficult. We understand the challenges and guide companies through the process.

Our proven process helps avoid product launch delays. When packages do not meet the requirements, we assist with finding solutions. Our pricing is competitive and we offer volume discounts. Lastly, Keystone Package Testing creates an accurate test plan to eliminate expensive over-testing.

Summary of TAPPI 402 Conditioning Testing

This standard defines the standard of controlled atmospheres for normal, preconditioning, conditioning, and testing of paper, paper products, and standard pulp test handsheets. TAPPI T402 also covers the standard atmosphere for handling the materials so they can reach equilibrium with the respective atmosphere.

It is important to know the overall limits of the temperatures and the limits within which the temperature must be kept. The required relative humidity and temperature are not easy to attain. Therefore, attention is given to the design, evaluation, and maintenance of the standard room.

The TAPPI T 402 testing standard does not include special conditioning and testing atmospheres. Examples consist of those that attempt to simulate tropical or arctic environments.

For many papers and boards, roughly the same preconditioning moisture content obtained by the procedure may be achieved. This is done by using a sealed cabinet to obtain relative humidity.

Scope of TAPPI 402 Controlled Atmospheric Conditioning Testing

The physical properties of a sample at 50% RH depend on whether the sample is brought to 50% from relative humidity. This humidity hysteresis effect is 5-25% of the test value for many physical properties. Conditioning down to 50% gives most papers a moisture content very nearly the same as conditioning up to 60%.

Both temperature and relative humidity have serious effects on the physical properties of paper and board. An example of these effects includes changes in temperature. This leads to as much effect as a change of 2% relative humidity (RH). The temperature effect may be greater than the RH effect for synthetic fibers and plastic laminates.

Significance of TAPPI T 402 Package Conditioning Testing

This procedure avoids exposure of the sample to direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, and relative humidity. The sheets are handled as little as possible. If low-temperature storage is used, the sample should be protected against condensation.

TAPPI T402 procedures also include cutting the specimens from a sample where critical dimensions are involved. The sheets are then exposed to the preconditioning atmosphere so that both surfaces of single sheets are freely exposed.

Details from the report include general information. The report covers information such as date, time, location, and test engineer.

Specific data within the report will be provided as well. Examples include the number of packages tested and the number of failures recorded. As well as, any conditioning within the test.

Other information found in the report includes temperature control, relative humidity, and preconditioning. Lastly, any variations in the testing standards will also be added to the testing report.

Expert TAPPI T402 Integrity Laboratory Package Testing

Keystone strives to give our customers more time and energy on product development instead of testing. We have a full lab of test equipment which permits us to provide short lead times on scheduling. In addition to TAPPI 402 testing, Keystone has a full scope of expertise including compression, seal strength, vibration, and altitude.
