TAPPI/ANSI T453 Effect of Dry Heat Testing

TAPPI/ANSI T453 Effect of Dry Heat Compliance Testing

TAPPI T453 package testing is an accelerated aging test that uses dry heat to evaluate packaging components and materials. As an ISTA and ISO 17025 certified lab, we realize the importance of TAPPI/ANSI T453 integrity testing. Meeting the ANSI T453 dry heat testing can be difficult. We understand the challenges and guide companies through the process.

Keystone takes a consultative approach throughout the entire test program. When packages do not meet the requirements, we assist with finding solutions. We create an accurate test plan to eliminate expensive over-testing. Keystone Package Testing partners with customers to achieve package compliance.

Summary of TAPPI T453 Dry Heat Testing

The purpose of this TAPPI/ANSI method is to obtain inferences regarding the aging qualities of paper. The method is based on work that has been done with printing and writing paper. TAPPI T453 may also be used with discretion on other types of paper and boards.

This TAPPI/ANSI standard testing method specifies the procedure for testing heat-treated materials. The properties of the board are compared before and after accelerated aging in a forced ventilation oven.

Significance of TAPPI T453 Dry Heat Testing

The significance of this ANSI testing is to provide information on dry environments pertaining to packages in the transportation life cycle. Examples include the natural changes that may occur in the properties of paper over a period of time. It is also used to rank similar papers with respect to long-term stability.

Hostile environments that are used include exposure to high temperatures, moisture, visible ultraviolet radiation. Other environments include sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, and ozone gas. Properties that are compared before and after exposure include, but are not limited to, mechanical, optical, and chemical properties.

ANSI testing results from higher temperatures under prescribed conditions roughly correlate with those of natural aging. Caution is exercised in applying either the dry-aging or the moist aging method to a wide variety of paper grades.

Scope of ANSI 453 Dry Heat Effects Testing

The TAPPI T453 procedure involves suspending the sets of test specimens in the oven so that the specimens do not touch the walls of the oven. Exposing them to radiation from the heating coils is also avoided. Lastly, one untreated specimen is kept as a control.

The report will include general information such as date, time, location, and test engineer. Details of the package include the type of material and other materials. The number of packages and number of failures will also be recorded within the report.

Detailed information within the report includes the temperature and relative humidity of the test. Any deviations from the relevant TAPPI methods or any influences that may affect the test results are included in the report.
