Scope of TAPPI T810 Burst Strength Package Testing
The TAPPI T810 standard outlines procedures for testing the surface strength (or “stiffness”) of paper and paperboard products. The test method involves applying a gradually increasing load to a small circular area of the test sample until the sample either breaks or reaches a specified maximum load. The maximum load at which the sample deforms but does not break is used to calculate the surface strength of the sample.
Adherence to TAPPI T810 ensures that packages are designed and tested to withstand the rigors of the supply chain, reducing the risk of product damage, contamination, and loss of consumer confidence.
It’s important to note that the TAPPI T810 standard is not a sole determinant of the overall quality or performance of paper and paperboard products. TAPPI T810 Test Procedures
The conditioning of all the specimens are conducted according to TAPPI T402 “Standard Conditioning and Testing Atmospheres for Paper, Board, Pulp Handsheets, and Related Products.
The TAPPI T810 test procedure involves applying a gradually increasing load to a small circular area of the test sample until the sample either breaks or reaches a specified maximum load.
The maximum load at which the sample deforms but does not break is used to calculate the surface strength of the sample. This measurement is an important indicator of the overall quality and performance of the paper or paperboard product, as it provides insight into its ability to resist surface damage and maintain its strength and stability during use.
To perform the TAPPI T810 test, the micrometer instrument is placed on the paper sample and the thickness measurement is taken at multiple points along the length of the sample. The results of these measurements are then used to calculate an average thickness value, which is reported as the TAPPI T810 value for that sample.
Once testing is completed, a report is created including the following information:
- Date, time, location and test engineer
- Average test duration
- Test results
- Maximum and minimum values
- Any standard deviations about the average
