Summary of TAPPI Bursting Strength Testing

TAPPI T807 is a standard method used to determine the measurement of the surface roughness of paper and board. This includes such as corrugated board and paperboard.

TAPPI T807 testing provides a consistent and objective measure of the strength and durability of packaging materials. This is important, as different materials and designs may perform differently under different conditions, such as temperature, humidity, and other environmental factors. By standardizing the test conditions, TAPPI T807 ensures that results are comparable and reliable, even when testing different materials and designs.

Another important advantage of TAPPI T807 is that the standard is recognized and accepted by packaging industry professionals. This means that results from TAPPI T807 testing can be used to support quality control and product design decisions, as well as for communication with customers and other stakeholders. Its standardized and objective approach makes it a valuable resource for packaging manufacturers and suppliers, and its widespread recognition and acceptance within the industry make it a useful tool for quality control and product design decisions.

Scope of T807 Package Integrity Testing

TAPPI T807 evaluates the strength and durability of packaging materials, and for ensuring that packaged goods are adequately protected during transit and storage. This allows for the selection of materials that provide adequate protection for the packaged goods and helps to minimize the risk of damage during transportation and storage.

Surface roughness is a crucial parameter in the paper industry as it affects the print quality, feel, and appearance of the paper. A rough surface can cause issues such as smudging, curling, or even breakage during the printing or handling process. As a result, it is important to have a standard method of measuring surface roughness, and TAPPI T807 provides just that. It is used by paper manufacturers, printers, and converters to ensure that their products meet the desired quality specifications. The standard is also used by researchers to evaluate the effects of various factors on the surface roughness of the paper, such as pulp furnish, additives, and processing conditions.

TAPPI T807 specifies a method for measuring the average roughness (Ra) of a paper surface using a profilometer or similar instrument. The measurement is performed over a defined length, usually 5mm or 10mm, and the results are reported in units of micrometers (µm). The average roughness is defined as the average deviation of the roughness profile from the mean line, and it is a widely accepted parameter for characterizing the surface roughness of paper.

TAPPI T807 Package Testing Procedures

Preparation: Clean the paper surface to be tested, removing any dirt or debris, and cut a sample that is at least 50mm wide and 150mm long. Make sure the sample is flat and free of any wrinkles or folds.

Profilometer setup: Calibrate the profilometer according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Select the appropriate probe and set the measurement length to either 5mm or 10mm, as specified in the TAPPI T807 standard.

Measurement: Place the paper sample on a flat surface and position the profilometer probe so that it makes contact with the paper surface. Start the measurement and ensure that the probe moves smoothly along the surface, without jumping or skipping.

Data analysis: Collect the data from the profilometer and calculate the average roughness (Ra) according to the TAPPI T807 standard. The average roughness is defined as the average deviation of the roughness profile from the mean line, and it is calculated as the arithmetic average of the absolute values of the deviations.

Reporting: Report the average roughness (Ra) in units of micrometers (µm) and include any relevant information such as the measurement length, the date of the measurement, and the identity of the profilometer and probe used.

It is important to follow the TAPPI T807 standard carefully, as any deviations from the procedure can result in inaccurate measurements and affect the comparability of results. Additionally, it is recommended to regularly calibrate the profilometer and ensure that the probe and instrument are in good working condition.
